CE Ratings for Motorcycle Gear Explained

CE Ratings On Motorcycle Gear: What do they mean?

According to Regulation (EU) 2016/425, all motorcycle protective clothing is classified as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). To ensure your safety, our gear is tested by accredited institutes to meet specific European EN standards. Only products that pass these rigorous tests are awarded the CE Mark (European Conformity).

Garment Ratings the EN 17092 Standard

This standard evaluates the entire garment including jackets and pants specifically testing for "slide time" and structural integrity. Testing covers critical zones likely to impact the ground, assessing abrasion resistance, tear strength, and seam strength.

Protection Classes at a Glance:

  • Class AAA: The highest level of protection, designed for high-speed riding and track use.
  • Class AA: Balanced protection specifically suited for diverse, long-distance touring.
  • Class A: The minimum requirement, optimized for urban riding environments.
  • Class B: Offers Class A abrasion resistance but is designed without impact armor.
  • Class C: A non-shell garment intended solely to hold armor in place.

    Understanding the CE Label Anatomy

The CE label provides essential safety information through three key elements: a motorcycle icon, the specific test passed, and the assigned protection category level.

    Impact Protection EN 1621 Standard

While EN 17092 focuses on the outer shell, the impact armor (also known as protective pads or protectors) inside is certified under the 1621 standard. This ensures the armor can effectively absorb and dissipate forces during a crash.

    • EN 1621-1: Protectors for shoulders, elbows, knees, and hips.
    • EN 1621-2: Back protectors specifically for spine safety.
    • EN 1621-3: Chest protectors for vital organ shielding.

    Why It Matters

These standards exist to create standardized safety across all brands, ensuring that when you see a rating, you know exactly what level of protection you are getting for your ride.
