Riding Beyond Limits: An Interview with a Southern California Rider

Few things compare to the freedom of the open road, the hum of an engine beneath you, and the wind rushing past as the landscape unfolds. We're excited to feature Barry, our Rider of the Month, and one of our passionate Beyond Riders community members from Southern California. He talks about what drives his love for motorcycles, how he stays safe and stylish on every ride, and what it truly means to ride “beyond limits.”
What inspired you to start riding motorcycles?
The incredible feeling of freedom on the open road and how healing it is!
Describe your perfect ride — where do you go, who do you ride with, and how does it feel?
My perfect ride is in Southern California, up through the twisties in the mountains on Hwy 74, through Mountain Center and into Idyllwild for lunch. Then continuing through the winding canyon roads past 5,000' and back home on the highway with a temperature swing of over 50 degrees. We ride in a group of 3-5 bikes, and it is a truly amazing experience there and back.
What’s your go-to Beyond Riders gear and why?
I have several Beyond Riders jackets and hoodies. Because of the temperature change, I start off with a lightweight hoodie and pack a windproof hoodie in my tour pack. This gear is comfortable and protective, and looks awesome.
How has protective gear changed the way you ride?
Although it seldom rains here in Southern California, I can now ride in any weather conditions with my Beyond Riders gear. As long as I can avoid traffic, I will ride in temperatures up to 110 degrees now. This gear is incredibly comfortable, provides outstanding protection, and looks great.
Any funny, unexpected, or memorable stories from your rides?
I was once chased by a very unfriendly Doberman while riding my motorcycle in a residential neighborhood. It is possible he was just trying to get a closer look at my Beyond Riders jacket!
Do you customize your gear or bike to match your style?
Because it can get very hot in Southern California, I generally choose lighter colors when riding. Beyond Riders has a wide range of colors which makes it easy to choose. I have also chosen multiple colors of the same gear because it's just so comfortable and functional.
What advice would you give to a new rider choosing their first protective gear?
Do not skimp on protective gear! Safety should never be compromised, and you should never ride without it. Buy the best because your safety is worth it.
What does being part of the Beyond Riders community mean to you?
There is comfort in knowing that being part of the Beyond Riders community means we have chosen the highest quality protective gear available, which is also comfortable and looks great. Being safe and looking good in functional gear is absolutely possible!
